Your child's first haircut: making it happy and easy

A warm, friendly welcome from the team at INCH Hair Design in Gortnahoe, Co. Tipperary

A first haircut is a lovely little milestone — one of those keepsake-a-curl, take-a-photo moments. It can also feel like a big unknown, both for your child and for you. Will they sit still? Will there be tears? Here at our salon in Gortnahoe, we've welcomed plenty of nervous first-timers into the chair, and the truth is that most of them do grand. With a bit of gentle preparation, a first haircut can be a happy adventure rather than a battle. Here's how we'd go about it.

Pick your timing carefully

Small children have good hours and cranky hours, and you know your own child's best. Aim for a slot after a nap and after a snack, when they're well-rested and not hungry. A tired, peckish toddler in a strange chair is a tall order for anyone. When you book, it's worth mentioning it's a first cut so we can leave a little extra time and never rush the moment.

Talk it up beforehand

Children take their cue from you. If you're relaxed and treat it like a fun outing, they usually follow. In the days before, chat about it in a cheerful way — "we're going to get your hair tidied so it's nice and neat." Some families like to play barber shop at home first, pretending to snip with fingers, or reading a picture book about a haircut. The more familiar it feels, the less daunting the real thing is.

The goal of a first haircut isn't a perfect fringe — it's a happy child who's glad to come back.

What to bring

  • A comfort item. A favourite teddy, a soother, or a well-loved toy gives little hands something to hold.
  • A distraction. A phone with a favourite programme or a few songs works wonders for keeping a small person settled in the chair.
  • A snack or treat. Something small to nibble, or a promised treat afterwards, gives them a little something to look forward to.

Sitting on your lap is perfectly fine

There's no rule that says a child has to sit alone in the big chair. For a first cut, many little ones are far happier perched on a parent's lap, and we're very used to working that way. If your child would rather watch you get your fringe trimmed first, that's grand too — sometimes seeing Mam or Dad go first takes all the mystery out of it. We go at your child's pace, not the clock's.

Keep your own expectations gentle

A toddler's first haircut is rarely a still, silent affair, and that's completely normal. We're aiming for tidy and even, not a fashion-shoot finish — a wriggly two-year-old is not going to sit for a detailed restyle, and we wouldn't ask them to. If they've had enough halfway through, we'll do what we can and gladly finish another day. There's no drama in that; we'd much rather your child leaves smiling.

A few words for after

Heap on the praise — tell them how great they did and how lovely their hair looks. That good feeling is what makes the next visit easy. And if you'd like to keep a little curl from the first snip, just say and we'll set one aside for you. It's a small thing, but parents are often glad of it years later.

Children are genuinely welcome at INCH — ladies, gents and little ones alike — and children's cuts are part of what we do every week. You can read more about our full range of salon services if you'd like to know what else we offer, and when you're ready, book your child's first haircut online or over the phone. Tell us it's their first and we'll make sure it's a happy one.

Ready when they are — book online or give the salon a call and we'll set aside plenty of time for a gentle first cut.
